The foundation is located on the site of a natural water reservoir and bottling plant called the Sylt-Quelle. The German word Quelle means source; an appropriate word, as the Sylt Quelle Foundation is intended as a place of beginnings: of ideas, of creative projects.
The kunst:raum sylt quelle Foundation consists of a gallery, a large production hall, and five apartments for artists. The buildings are set in an wide, open space which is used for installations and open-air events and which unifies the modern architectural complex into an exciting meeting place. The gallery is located in the Quelle building: a light, uncluttered exhibition space in which temporary exhibitions of international contemporary art take place.
The production hall – where the Sylt-Quelle water is bottled – is the foundation’s “big theatre”, a flexible performance space in which an audience of up to 500 people can enjoy both guest productions and works produced by artists staying at the foundation: book and poetry readings, performances, concerts, chamber-opera, films, lectures, podium discussions and science events.
The five fully equipped apartments are for artists staying on the island on sylt quelle work/residence grants, but they may also be used - when available - for guests of the foundation. Throughout the year, artists, actors musicians and writers come the kunst:raum to work on projects, to participate in events, and to exchange ideas.
